Postural Control

Recent activities include the development of an experimental apparatus and method for estimating the visco-elastic properties of the ankle during quiet standing.
For the first time, the relative contributions of muscle stiffness, spinal reflexes and active control to postural stability could be quantified (M. Casadio).
These results led to the formulation of a new model of postural control, based on the notion of hypothesis of intermittent control (A. Bottaro).
This model reproduced several phenomena that were not explained by previous models.
Clinical studies have been carried out in collaboration with Dr. L. Baratto (Rehabilitation and Functional Recovery Unit, Colletta Hospital, Arenzano), with funding from the Italian Ministry of University, Education and Research.
The modelling work is done in collaboration with prof. T. Nomura. Graduate School of Engineering Science Osaka University, Japan.
